The company in question is a Japanese technology developer by the name of Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL). It says that it has manage to develop both the world’s and industry’s first 8K OLED display in two display sizes – 8.3-inches and 13.3-inches. According to Anandtech, the displays run on crystalline oxide semiconductor technology, and both panels are able to output at a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels. In terms of pixel density, the 8.3-inch display comes with a massive 1061 PPI (pixels per inch), while the 13.3-inch display only has 662 PPI. For context, Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium’s 5.5-inch 4K display is set at 807 PPI. However, it should be noted that 13.3-inch actually has a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the former is limited to 60Hz. There’s also the issue regarding the display’s power draw. At 8K, it’s very likely that any phone or tablet using SEL’s display will see a significant impact on its battery life. Of course, this is all just speculation, and any power and battery application has yet to be released by the company. On that note, there’s still no word as to when SEL’s 8K displays will make it to the market. Further, the company is incapable of producing the displays on its own, meaning that it will have no choice but to enter into a partnership with a company with the means of producing its 8K OLED displays.
