The details came from Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a note to investors. Beginning the aforementioned MacBook Pro, future hardware will be using the scissor mechanism instead of the Butterfly mechanism. This will result in keyboards that are less likely to fail due to heat, dust and other small particles.
The use of the scissor switches will make the keyboard a little thicker, but will have longer key travel as a result. The new scissor mechanism will also use a glass fibre for a reinforced structure. But all that said, Kuo believes that the average user will not be able to tell the difference. For those who have had issues with the Butterfly switches, this is good news. This may also make for a more comfortable typing experience, depending on your preference. It’s not set in stone yet, but we’ll find out for sure once Apple makes its announcements.
