Interestingly, Huawei has decided to come out with separate 5G and 4G variants for its new chip. While both variants still feature four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores together with a 16-core Mali-G76 GPU, detailed specs showed that the Kirin 990 5G is slightly faster than the 4G variant:
According to Huawei, what made Kirin 990 series really stands out from others is that it is apparently the first all-in-one 5G solution in the world. The new Kirin 990 5G is said to be able to deliver up to 2.3Gbps downlink and 1.25Gbps uplink alongside the capability to support proper dual 5G SIM card. Huawei also claimed that the Kirin 990 5G able to deliver up to 6X time more AI performance while having better power efficiency at up to 8X than its competitors. Graphically, the new chip is apparently 6% more powerful and 20% more power efficient than Qualcomm Snapdragon 855.
The 5th generation ISP inside the Kirin 990 series is also apparently able to provide up to 15% more throughput. It is also able to deliver a better image and video noise reduction capability at 30% and 20% respectively. On stage, Huawei stated that its Kirin 990 5G is ready to be implemented into devices right as opposed to its competitors, which sounds like a jab at Samsung Exynos 980. While the company didn’t mention this specifically, we expect the first smartphone that would feature the new chip is the Mate 30 series which will be making its global debut in Munich later this month.
